The number of new diesel cars decreased sharply, from 5.6 million in 2017 to 2.2 million in 2021. But also the number of new gasoline cars declined, from 6.2 million to 4.8 million. Especially the number of battery electric cars increased, from 0.1 million in 2017 to 0.9 million in 2021. In total though, the number of new car registrations in Europe in 2021 turned out to be about 20 % lower than in 2017, to a large extent due to Brexit. Average CO2 emission levels declined from 118 g/km in 2017 to 97 g/km in 2017, according to the NEDC measurement procedure.
