Between 2012 and 2020, the new car fleet in China gained significantly in weight, size, and power. An average new car in China is now heavier, bigger and has more engine power than its European counterpart, but still much lighter, less powerful and slightly smaller than an average new car in the US. CO2 emission levels for new cars in Europe dropped by about 20 %, whereas the decrease was only about 15 % in the US and 10 % in China. The average new car in the US emits about 70 % more CO2 than in Europe, in China it is about 30 % more.
