7 Monthly Statistics

Many EU member states release monthly statistics on new vehicle registrations. Road transportation authorities, like the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, and automaker associations, like the United Kingdom’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, publish figures on shares of different powertrains and brands. This page brings together data on select European vehicle markets to track effects of policies and market events.

Figure 7-1 and 7-2 cover the German new car market. Figure 7-1 shows the aftermath of Dieselgate in Germany, with diesel and Volkswagen Group brand new car market shares declining after the scandal broke on September 18, 2015. Figure 7-2 follows the German electric vehicle market after the introduction of subsidies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in May 2016. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are not subsidized in Germany.
